San Antonio, TX

Our life is about to change...BIG TIME. Brian has accepted a inner-company job offer in San Antonio, TX. Last week we went house-hunting while my dear sister and her husband came to our house to watch the kids...little mini-vacation for them! (They enjoyed the one week of hot weather we've had all year!)
I think we saw over 30 houses over a 3 day period of time. We were exhausted! But finally, on the last day of showings there were two homes that we liked a lot...which happened to have a very similar floor plan. (So many floor plans out there, I can't believe it!). It also has a big backyard, and is within walking distance to the community kiddie pool, park/playground, biking/jogging trail AND elementary school. It's in a 'double' cul-de-sac, so as the neighbors put it; "The kids rule the street." It has 4 bedrooms upstairs plus an open area for a 'game room'. Here are some pics of it.

I didn't take a pic from the front door,
but this is what the front room looks like from the kitchen table.

driven C.R.A.Z.Y.

This morning AJ was into everything...and yes, it was on purpose. All of the no-no's were being rummaged through. My goodness! Can't we at least eat breakfast before this mischief starts?, I thought. But what came out of my mouth was, "AJ! You're driving me crazy!" To which Ethan replies, "Why is she driving you crazy, Mom?"
"She getting in my nightstand, she getting in my make-up drawer, and she's lifting the toilet seat. She knows these are no-no's, so it's driving me crazy that she's doing this!"
Pause.
"Mom? What drives you crazy about me?"
Pause. Think. Be careful. But truthful.
"Ethan, it drives me crazy when you start to cry and kick and scream because you want to sit on the very same toilet I just happen to be sitting on. It's silly for you to act like that. We have 2 toilets. You can use the other one. That's what drives me crazy."
"Oh."

That very scenario had just happened 30 minutes before.

End of conversation. (is he really just 3?)

5 days without my dishwasher

If I were to live without a dishwasher for the remainder of my days I would do the following:
1. Drink with a straw (eliminating the need to scrub around the rim)
2. Grill all of my food (no pots and pans to clean)
3. use plastic IKEA-ware for dinnerware (can't break in the sink)

and lastly...if it were possible...after doing a prescrub getting all the of 'food' off the dishes, I would soak my dishes in Clorox, rinse and dry.

Tomorrow my dishwasher will be re-installed. So lucky me doesn't have to 'adapt' to these changes. But it's nice to know that I've been thinking about it!

Come one....come all!

For three weeks Brian has been trying to get a hold of our landlady. I say Brian, because I wasn't as concerned as he was about the constant sound of water running through the pipes. But last Thursday he called and asked me to call the water company to see what they could do about it. Find the water meter and I could determine if there was a leak, and how bad the leak was. They tried and tried and tried to help me locate the water meter. I failed and failed and failed to find it. Trying not to sound like a broken record "it's not here!" (or stupid) I told them I'd call them on Friday if we still couldn't find it, and enlisted my neighbors' help. Still no luck.
Friday was busy...it was Father's Day weekend after all, and there was lots to do, none of which included looking for the water meter again. Although, I did drive by our landlady's house and knocked. No answer. Saturday and Sunday were filled with other things (such as celebrating our fabulous fathers!) Monday: We drove by landlady's house again, left another message after we saw her driving in her car and headed to Disneyland. (FUN!) Tuesday: I called our landlady again. My message said, "Betty, we really need to talk to you about this water leak! Please call us!" After my message I found standing water outside my kitchen window. It was so deep it was flooding my little patch of ground cover clover and killing it.
Finally, she called.
Long story short:
Betty came with an irrigation guy last night. (probably thought it had something to do with the sprinklers)
Brian touched the water: Hot (water heater is on the other side of the wall where the standing water is, but there's no sign on or around the w/h of a leak.
Wednesday morning (this morning):
8:00am Betty arrives
8:30 Joe Plumber and his assistant Carlos arrive
9:00 I call water company again...because the plumbers can't find the water meter either. (Suddenly I don't feel so stupid)
9:30 Water District Team #1 arrives with a shovel
10:00 Water District Team #2 arrives with some fancy yellow beeping sticks
10:30 Water District Team #3 arrives with a guy whose beard goes to his chest. Walks to where the other men are searching, takes 2 steps to the left and taps the lid with his pole. (He used to read the meter 'back in the day')
10:31 Water District Team #3 leaves.
10:32 Water District Team #2 tells me they'll have someone come out and chop a pathway from the road to the meter. Um...okay.

from left to right: Team #2, Team #2, Team #1, Team #3

12:45 Chopping team arrives and makes a lovely 'pathway' from the road to the meter.

Rosemary bush 'before' picture (taken in the spring)

Ethan is standing on that blasted water meter that evaded all of us but the bearded dude.

meanwhile: the plumbers locate the leak (in a slab that feeds the master bathroom hot water)...takes dishwasher out, cuts holes in the wall behind the dishwasher, cuts a hole under the sink in the 2nd bathroom, and another one under the sink in the master bathroom.
3:33 plumbers leave...back again tomorrow or Friday to patch the drywall.

It's been a busy day. And I'm glad we don't have to foot the bill.

Now what do we do with the rosemary bush?

A wonderful reminder

Sometimes all I need to hear is:
Don't you quit!
You keep walking.
You keep trying.
There is help and happiness ahead.

Rock a bye Baby

Sometimes it's really hard to live far away...especially when Erika had her baby on June 5th and Angela was expecting her new arrival at anytime. So I wrapped up AJ's two baby dollies and both kids snuggled into the rocking chair. Their singing was completely spontaneous, and so so cute.

Looking Pretty

"It's too quiet" Brian said as we were making lunch after church today...
AJ found my makeup drawer today.
Thank goodness for liquid dishsoap.

Start It Out Right

Something in me has been screaming to exercise. So much so that I've started having dreams about it. I had a dream last week that Brian and I had been to the doctor and both of us were 90% body fat. Is that even possible? I don't know, but apparently my brain and body were working me up for something. I have been longing to get back on my bike since Ethan turned 1. Dreaming/longing don't count though, does it! Summer is (again!) upon us and I live in a beach city. Not that I'm worried about swimsuits, I'm more focused on the fact that I'm loosing my breath faster as I 'dance' with the kids to music on iTunes, and that my muscles shake way too quickly after a few jumps around the couch/room doing the hokie pokie. It's terribly embarrassing.
So, the day after my dream (Friday) we were shopping in Target. We were racing down the aisle to the restroom when Ethan stops dead in his tracks and points to a large box. "Look! Mom!" What is he pointing to? A bike trailer...did he have the dream too? ...ON SALE...! "Oh, we are so coming back for that!" (which we did)
Now...how do I bring this up with Brian? usually, I'll at least call him before I purchase something that's not planned for...and more than $50. . .that night I told him about my dream...and then brought him to the car (it was still in the trunk)
Even now I can't tell you if he's excited about it, but yesterday (Saturday) he assembled it while I googled "bike trails in Fallbrook" which led us to a 7.2 mile stretch of paved, mostly flat, trail that went straight to the beach. With a little drive we could park (for free!) and bike to the beach? What luck! We didn't want to go to the beach because it's Memorial weekend and perfect weather = no parking available, naturally. But if we could RIDE our bikes to the beach!!
Brian didn't think we'd make it that far, and without wanting to pressure him (because he would be doing the hardest part: pulling the trailer) didn't pack any beach gear. If he didn't have such a great endurance level, and so much love for his wife...plus adding in a few comments about burning body fat, and remembering he used to bike 7 miles (one-way) to work everyday in Logan...we probably never would have made it to the beach. But I think he felt the 'pull' just as strongly as I did. Destination: BEACH. Brian pulled Ethan in the trailer with our packed lunches, and AJ was on the seat in front of my bike. It was picture perfect. I had on a camelback and AJ would reach for it and pull it to her mouth. Ethan watched for airplanes, and gave quite a lot of people a good laugh when we had to stop for a 'potty break'. Everyone was chuckling as they rode by.
WE MADE IT! We rode our bikes to the beach. It was exhilarating. I couldn't have been happier. Even when we had to ride the 7.2 miles BACK to the car. It was seriously a great way to start the weekend.

Yeah...our butts are super sore.
Here's to a fun summer!

Sandbox Project

When we moved here we acquired a wooden box that movers would put a TV in to keep from being banged up. Our TV is much to old to fit into such a slim box, but I was determined to keep it and 'make something'! (Sometimes, I just can't 'let things go') It sat in our garage for over 8 months...while I dreamt up what it could be. After months of contemplation, and hours spent at the park playing in the sand... I knew what it was supposed to be: a sandbox. It became my project while Brian was in New Jersey. I sanded the edges, corners, rough spots to minimize any splinter possibilities. Sprayed a sealer on it to keep it from rotting when exposed to the rain/sprinklers, drilled holes in the bottom and put landscape fabric down to let the water drain out, but also to keep the ants from coming in from beneath.
I didn't paint it, or make it pretty, but I'm still excited about it.

who needs sand?
When Brian and Ethan came home from camping on Saturday, we took a trip to the hardware store and bought the sand.
250lbs of sand later = two happy, sandy kids.

Girls Night/Boys Night

Tonight was Ethan & Brian's Fathers and Sons camp out at Oak Grove National Park. Brian flew in from New Jersey at noon...reported to work...went to the doctor...came home, ate dinner...and left again with a VERY excited little boy. I kept prepping Ethan that 'when Dad comes home, you're going to go camping with him' His little enthusiasm helped Brian keep on track to getting out the door for another night 'away from home'. Making one last bathroom trip he was washing his hands when he asked me, "Mom...I don't know! Will there be toys there or not?" I said, 'no, not toys, but lots of trees, and you'll get to sleep outside!' "Oh...there will be beds!" was his reply.

rosy cheeks!

snake caught by the boys

Annie Jane and I had our little girls night out. It happened quick, as AJ is a wiggle worm. BUT...I did accomplish what I set out for :) . . . painted toenails/fingernails :) It's silly because I didn't even have a bright color to paint with. It kindof dampened the initial excitement I was anticipating from her watching me. She probably couldn't even tell what I was doing, as the color was more like a peachy color. Oh well, it was just the two of us and there were girly things to do! But Brian has the camera and so there won't be any shots of pretty toenails/fingernails. PINK toenail polish is on the list to buy at Target, next time I go.

Some recent conversations with Ethan

Conversation 1:
Ethan: Mom? You're putting your hair down???
Me: (Taking my hair out of a pony tail) Yes, I am.
Ethan: Yay! I love your hair down! (Clapping follows)

Conversation 2:

Ethan: What are you doing?
Me: Getting the baby clothes ready to take to Auntie Erika. She's going to have a new baby
Ethan: oh! Just like Angela?
Me: Yes. Just like Auntie Angela.
Ethan: Is she going to take her shirt off to get the baby out?
Me: um...yep.
Ethan: Oh, and then put her shirt back on?
Me: Yep.

Don't we all wish it were that simple?

Conversation 3:
Ethan: Mom, I don't want you cleaning all day!
Me: I haven't cleaned for a month, Ethan. I don't want to live in a dirty house all of the time.
Ethan: I do!

Conversation 4:
I want to hear Daddy's heartbeat.
(He puts his head on Brian's chest)
"I can't hear it!"
"Daddy's heart is lost!"

Family Home Evening Moment

Tonight was our 7th FHE in a row. (we're on a roll!) Usually, it lasts 15 min. (tops!) and our lessons are taken from the nursery lesson book. Tonight it was my turn to teach, and given Ethan was sick all day, I hadn't prepared/reviewed the nursery book. So, I borrowed what our Primary Pres. had taught as sharing time to the junior primary: The First Vision. To begin, we walked all around the room (going to different churches). Then Ethan repeated James 1:5 (as I read it to him), then we were "tall, like the trees in the sacred grove" with our branches waving, and birds were singing, and the sun was shining, the flowers were growing, and it was a beautiful morning. Then we knelt, like Joseph Smith did, and I said to Ethan, "Then it was bright...so so bright" and we shielded our eyes because it was so bright! I asked him, "Ethan, do you know why it was so bright?"
Ethan: Yes
Me: Why?
Ethan: Because Heavenly Father and Jesus came.
Me: Yes, Ethan....that's right! because Heavenly Father and Jesus came.

Tonight was a very special FHE.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Tonight I tried something new with Ethan. Over the past little while he's been giving me trouble about eating. If I recalled all of the times, I'm sure I could single out reasons why it happened this one night...and then again on another. Most recently for instance, he's been sick (fever first, then a cough) so I can understnd a loss of appetite. Yesterday he seemed more on the mend and I wanted to fix him a dinner that he would eat (chicken pillows) and get some good protein in his body again. He was excited about it, until we sat down and then he screamed, "I don't want to eat anything!" The tears were bigger and more fake than I've seen in 2 days. I sent him to cry in his room so that Annie and I could eat in peace, and told him when he decided to come eat, dinner would be waiting. I didn't want to wait too long though (why don't they understand that if they only tried it!...they'd forget the fuss!) so I called Brian at work and had him talk to Ethan. Meanwhile, I picked him up and carried him to his chair while he was talking to Brian so that when he hung up, his train of thought would still be focused on eating. Worked like a charm (he even told me as he was eating "This is my favorite, mom." "mmm-hmm" was all I could say, I was so frustrated.)
Tonight I couldn't pinpoint a reason for his definance, other than that he's been able to do it before...and I felt a 'test' coming on. We were playing outside and I lost track of time, so when I looked at the clock and it said 5:15pm, I knew dinner had to be fast. (Why can't my kids like/eat spaghetti o's on nights like tonight??) I made spaghetti, bread sticks, and zucchini. It was all ready, we sat down, had a prayer, fixed AJ's plate and when Ethan saw it yelled, "I want to eat a hot dog, not this!" I tried to sympathize with him "oh, a hot dog does sound yummy, let's fix that tomorrow night!" Instead of resolving it, he just got more mad. He threw off his bib, slid his cup, and placemat on the floor and started to cry...crocodile tears.
Deep breath. No way was this going to turn into a nightly ritual. I said, "Ethan, if you don't want to eat, that's fine, but don't be rude. Pick up your cup, and place mat, and cry in your bedroom. AJ and I are hungry. If you decide you want to eat then come and say you're sorry to me for being rude, and I'll fix you a plate."
He exited and the crying stopped pretty quick. I would call down the hall periodically, "Ethan, are you ready to eat?" "NO!"
So AJ and I ate our dinner. I hadn't noticed he had wandered into the living room and was sitting on the couch, so I don't know how long he was there...but he obviously wasn't upset anymore. I asked him if he was ready to say he was sorry and eat some dinner. No, came the reply. Well, I'm not going to wait all night to see when this kid decides it's time to eat...and I'm certainly not going to call Brian; I'm not making that a habit either. (these were the thoughts in my head) So...I set the timer. (Ethan completely understands anything with the timer, we use it a lot...when it goes off...it's time to go to bed, clean up, come inside, etc) I set it for 5 minutes. I told him if he wanted to eat dinner, he needed to say 'sorry' before the timer went off.
He sat on the couch...dry-eyed, I might add. The timer went off. I cleared the table. I hadn't even dished up his food before his tantrum struck so clean-up was only AJ and I. Brian called: he's on his way. I tell him we have something to talk about. We hang up and Ethan says, "Mom, did you tell Dad I didn't eat my dinner?" (Inquisitively, no tears) "No," I said, "You're going to tell him why you didn't have dinner. And Ethan, that's going to make Dad feel really sad."
Now the real tears come. Is the thought of upsetting your Dad because you upset your Mom more traumatic than seeing that you've upset your mom? Tonight, it was.
So, Brian comes home, we tell the story. Brian has a 'father/son' talk with Ethan. And as I try to be as receptive as possible to this 2-year old...going on 16...apology that's being forced from his lips...I find myself convinced that Ethan knows exactly what he did.
Of course, his hunger pains kicked in, and he came to me (happy, I might add) saying, "Mom, I'm ready to eat my dinner now!"
I didn't give him any. Is that awful? His tears of disappointment weren't real (a mom can tell...heck, the way he was crying, a stranger could tell) so when Brian finished his dinner and there were leftover radishes in the vegetable tray, Ethan asked if he could have one. I said Yes.
Am I trying to ruin his tastebuds toward radishes forever? No...but that's quite the taste to have in your mouth if you're looking for something to satisfy tummy grumble. He wanted to bathe it in dip, but I put that away. Just radishes, honey! (I took one myself, as did Brian, so any future with radishes wouldn't be completely destroyed. We didn't laugh (out loud) or make a big deal out of anything. He just went to bed (30 minutes earlier than usual) What else is there to do in order to ignore the fact that you're hungry? I kissed him and hugged him tight, told him I loved him and said, "I hope tomorrow you make a good decision to eat dinner with the family"
We'll see.
Any suggestions?

"I almost bought a boat the other day"

AJ's piggie tails

There is a cute elderly sister in our ward who has continually asked us when we're going to get a wig for AJ so that everyone knows she a girl. Bless her heart! Today, I was successful in putting pigtails in her hair...along with some daisy hair bows I made. It was official! If the dress didn't convince people, the flowers would :) I stopped the sister in the hall to tell her to take a look at Annie in sacrament mtg and notice the flowers in her hair. It was a feeble attempt because by sacrament the flowers were out, and only 1 pig tail remained. Daddies just don't know how to re-do hair-dos :) But this is what she looked like this morning!

Santa Rosa Plateau & the Very Hungry Caterpillars

It's been a long time since we've ventured to the outdoors...that didn't have anything to do with the beach. But this weekend we went north to the Santa Rosa Plateau. It's an ecological reserve (47,815 acres) filled with wild flowers, some vernal pools, and an old homestead with a 400 year old oak tree. Turns out, this plateau used to be a volcano (wasn't everything either a volcano or underwater?) so there's lava rock, which prohibits the water draining 'fast' when it rains. The slow leak forms a vernal pool where snakes, fairy shrimp and tadpoles live. We saw snakes and tadpoles but didn't see the fairy shrimp!

Because of the winter rain, the wild flowers are spectacular this year. We saw Johnny Jump up's, red maid, I need to do some research and come back to label the ones I don't know.

1 red maid in a sea of yellow

California Poppies

Chocolate Lillies (a rarity, even in the rainy season)

Lupine, Poppies, and Cacti in the background
We hiked about 3 miles ...and during those 3 miles sometimes I would stop, look, and remind myself that we were still in busy SoCal....we had just escaped it for awhile. There wasn't a hint of civilization to be seen. It was beautiful! It was truly a refuge.

Seas of purple and yellow on the plateau
We ate lunch at the old adobe homestead, under the shade of the old oak tree. One of the rangers there said that the faucet (below) was about 8-9 inches clear of the trunk when she first started working there (25 years ago). We sat with some hikers from Pasadena, out to see the wild flowers like the rest of us.

walking up to the homestead

A view looking up into the oak tree. The branches shaded the whole area and even touches the ground by our picnic table.

AJ had the best seat, in the hiking backpack, but Ethan was a trooper and hiked endlessly...until he had fallen about 4 times. By the 4th time he was done...too tired to walk straight, and pick up his feet. So Brian put him on his shoulders. We finished off the day by grabbing In-N-Out shakes...another lost commodity when we moved to Fallbrook. (The closest one is 20 minutes away) It was such a fun day! Getting there in the early morning Brian noticed large bugs crossing the road. He slowed down the car and sure enough, there were dozens of caterpillars crossing the road. When we pulled into the parking lot we had to watch where we stepped to avoid squishing them. They were everywhere, and they were fast. The greeting ranger (where we paid our dues) said they weren't sure yet what species it was, but perhaps the painted lady. Ethan mostly watched the path for the hungry caterpillars as we walked. After we passed the vernal pools however, the caterpillars disappeared. Heading back after lunch, when it was hot, most caterpillars were off the path and up onto a blade of grass. Look closely and you'll notice the darker 'stems' of the blade. They are all caterpillars.

Annie Jane turns 1

Annie Jane's Birth
Our little princess turned 1 today. 365 days earlier we were in the hospital, approached 3 different times to consider going home and letting her come 'naturally' rather than being induced. Their delivery center was too full and they were sending people to other hospitals. They tried to convince me that the induction probably wouldn't work, that I'd be miserable for 36 hours and go home, only to wait for her to come naturally anyway. I'm sure they were pretty frustrated with me...as I was with them for continuing to ask...but when they administered the Cytotek at 3pm (4 hours past the original time) and the 'birthing team' being paged overhead for delivery 6 hours later, I got several comments from the team, "Well, you were the last one we expected to deliver!"...Annie arrived at 9:41 PM.
What a wonderful year she has made for us. Always vocal, she communicates quite well if she disagrees, and is soft spoken if she's content with life. She knows "mom mom mom mom" and is starting to enunciate her 'NO' better. She understands so much. I say she is full of emotion Brian would call it drama...and Ethan occasionally says "Stop this llama drama!" At any rate, we love her to pieces and our home wouldn't be the same without her. Thank you Annie Jane for a wonderful first year.
Here are some great pictures of her first year.

Happy Birthday sweetie! We love you!

We celebrated your day with bumps and bruises. I took the above picture of you in the morning because I didn't know what messes you'd make during the day (on your clothes). You bumped your eye and lip within an hour of each other, matching your already bruised forehead, and by the end of the night you looked pretty hammered.

We made a special dinner just for you: Grandma Hale's Mac n Cheese, green beans and Grandma's homemade applesauce. All of it your favorite things to eat. We then connected with Grandma and Grandpa Hale on Skype. They watched her open presents. We also got birthday wishes from cousins and Grandma Earl throughout the day too.

I made a Hello Kitty Cake for her. I was excited to do a frozen transfer again. I couldn't wait to see if AJ was going to be a 'cake' eater... or refuse it, like her brother, Ethan. He watched me make, bake and decorate the cake, even helped spread the first layer of frosting on before the transfer. (Even still...he didn't have any cake tonight) Annie on the other hand...enjoyed every bite.

Happy Birthday ANNIE JANE! Love you to pieces!
